Discover the Legacy:

Chateau Bellevue & the Austin Woman’s Club

We invite your organization to journey through time with a presentation on the storied history of Chateau Bellevue (est. 1874). From its architectural transformation into a French-style castle to the trailblazers who walked its halls, this is a quintessential Austin story of preservation and power.

A Rich Historical Tapestry

Our presentation brings to life the diverse figures who shaped this landmark:

  • The Visionaries: The families who built the estate and the architect who envisioned its "chateau" transformation.
  • The Heroes: Major Ira Evans—a Civil War hero, founder of Huston-Tillotson University, and the youngest Texas Speaker of the House.
  • The Press: The original owner and editor of the Austin American-Statesman.
  • The Legends: Meet "Athelie," the Chateau’s resident ghost.
  • The Preservationists: In 1929, 200 "movers and shakers"—including Governor Ma Ferguson—united to form the Austin Woman’s Club and rescue the mansion from ruin.

For 97 years, the Austin Woman’s Club has served as the steward of Chateau Bellevue, maintaining it as a vital hub for Austin’s civic, nonprofit, and business communities.

Presentation Highlights: The Three P's

Our 20–25 minute talk (plus Q&A) explores:

  1. People: From the original North family to the activist women of the 1920s.
  2. Place: The evolution of the site from "Bellevue Place" to the iconic Chateau we see today.
